The head of police in Richmond, Virginia choked up describing how rioters set a building on fire and wouldn’t let a fire truck get to the scene, forcing the officers to forcefully intervene to save a child trapped inside.
Peaceful protests in Richmond escalated into violence on Saturday, with radical mob setting ablaze a police cruiser, a bus and several buildings, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy headquarters. One of their targets was a building in Broad Street, in which there was a child, Richmond Police Chief Will Smith told journalists on Sunday.

“They prohibited us from getting on scene. We had to force our way to make a clear path for the fire department,” he said.
Protesters intercepted that fire apparatus several blocks away with vehicles and blocked fire department’s access [to the burning building]. Inside that building was a child!
At this point Smith seemed overwhelmed with emotion and had to take pause before he could continue. “When you take a legitimate issue and hijack it for unknown reasons, that is unacceptable to me, to [the police department], to the city of Richmond,” he said. “It truly is not Richmond. It’s not even Virginia. It’s not even the mid-Atlantic!”
Many of the protests in Richmond have splintered off, but ~1 a.m., responders are still putting out at GRTC bus on fire near the intersection of Broad and Monroe. Police sprayed pepper spray to get people off the street. #RichmondVApic.twitter.com/CJ5Ie2D6Dt
The police chief blamed the violence in the city on organized outsiders, who “had traveled many states to be here,” saying charges against instigators may be filed soon.
Richmond is among dozens of cities across the US rocked by rioting amid nationwide protests against police brutality. The wave of public outrage was unleashed by the choking death of black man George Floyd. He was killed while in custody of the Minneapolis, after a white officer kneeled on his neck and ignored his pleas to let him breathe.

Rioters have used large wheeled garbage containers to smash through the main gate of the CBS television complex during mass protest rallies and unrest in Los Angeles.
A video from the scene shows a large crowd of violent protesters ramming the fence with garbage containers and breaking it open. People were also throwing projectiles into the security guard booth.
A different clip shows security guards trying to close off the fence, while the rioters push another container into the gate and accidentally hit one of their own. It is not clear whether the protesters have made it past the entrance.

The demonstrations were sparked by the death of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, during his attempted arrest by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, earlier this week.
The protest rallies in Los Angeles and several other major cities across the US began peacefully but later escalated into rioting, looting, and clashes with police, forcing authorities in several states to introduce curfews and call in the National Guard.
The vast majority of the people arrested so far amid the unrest in Minneapolis had Minnesota addresses, despite the US officials, including the state governor and President Donald Trump, painting the rioters as mostly outsiders.
Of the 45 people arrested for rioting and looting on Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis, 38 had Minnesota addresses, FOX 9 reported, citing publicly available jail records. Only six detainees were registered out of state, and one person did not have address information listed.
This data seems to contradict the US media and officials, who have spent the past couple of days blaming everyone from white supremacists and police provocateurs to antifa and leftist extremists (and Russia of course!), while largely ignoring any notion that impoverished Americans might have been genuinely fed up with social injustice and see no other ways to make their voices heard.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said earlier that 80 percent of rioters had come from “outside.” Walz also accused white supremacists and drug cartels of fueling the riots to take advantage of the chaos.
US President Donald Trump in his turn also claimed that the majority of the rioters in Minnesota were not locals, blaming antifa and the “radical left” for the unrest.
80% of the RIOTERS in Minneapolis last night were from OUT OF STATE. They are harming businesses (especially African American small businesses), homes, and the community of good, hardworking Minneapolis residents who want peace, equality, and to provide for their families.
The demonstrations and riots in Minneapolis and several other major cities across the US were caused by the death of Minneapolis local George Floyd. Floyd, an unarmed black man, had died after being pinned down on the ground by a white police officer, who pressed a knee on Floyd’s neck. The video of the incident went viral, sparking outrage over police brutality.
Utah Governor Gary Herbert has activated the National Guard to tackle the unrest in downtown Salt Lake City, where the mayor in her turn issued an 8pm curfew amid the widening anti-police brutality protests.
Herbert directed the National Guard to “help control the escalating situation” in Salt Lake City, while calling on the protesters to behave peacefully.
“We are in close contact with our department of public safety and receiving regular updates,” the governor said.
Herbert’s announcement came around the same time as Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued an 8pm curfew.

Previously, a curfew was imposed in downtown Philadelphia and Los Angeles, after protests there escalated into riots with sporadic looting and vandalism. The National Guard has been deployed in Minneapolis for several days now, but has so far failed to quell the unrest as people rallying in the streets ignore the curfew orders.

Tensions have escalated in Florida, where crowds of Black Live Matter protesters descended on Miami streets denouncing police brutality and face off with cops in riot gear.
Riot police deployed tear gas and reportedly fired rubber bullets against an agitated crowd that converged on a police department garage in downtown Miami. While the majority of the protesters seemed peaceful, several people were seen throwing objects at the police protecting the building.
The protesters have gathered in downtown Miami on Saturday to stand in solidarity with George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died while being detained by police in Minnesota. The incident sparked unrest across the country.
The people carried signs and chanted “I Can’t Breathe” – the words Floyd was filmed saying as he was pinned on the ground by a white police officer earlier this week in Minneapolis. The man after the officer pressed a knee onto his neck while attempting to detain him. Floyd’s deaths caused an outcry and triggered riots and unrest in several major US cities.

A large group of demonstrators have swarmed a major highway in San Jose and shut down traffic to protest the police killing of George Floyd, as similar actions are sparked in cities across the nation.
Protesters were seen flooding Highway 101 and blocking the road on Friday evening, many carrying signs and shouting slogans against police brutality. Some engaged in vandalism, smashing car windows as the rally made its way down the freeway.
After a brief time, as cars attempted to break through the makeshift blockade and police amassed nearby, the demonstrators cleared off the roadway, dispersing into the city in different directions. One group has reportedly headed toward the 280 highway.
Similar intense protests – many of them devolving into clashes with police – have erupted in a number of American cities this week, with actions in California, Colorado, New York, Kentucky, Ohio, Arizona, Michigan and Minnesota, where the unrest was first kicked off.
Floyd’s final moments alive were captured in a viral video that emerged earlier this week, showing police officer Derek Chauvin as he pinned the man to the pavement with his knee to his throat, prompting riots, looting and arson in Minnesota’s Twin Cities over the last two days.
A massive group of demonstrators has converged on the White House to protest police brutality, reportedly prompting the Secret Service to place the building on lockdown as tensions run high between marchers and police.
Gathering in northwest Washington, DC on Friday evening, protesters briefly shut down traffic on a major thoroughfare before reaching the White House, where a heavy police presence, barricades and a huge crowd of demonstrators could be seen in videos shared online.

Police clad in riot gear were seen scrambling to get in position around the White House’s West Wing, where the Oval Office is located.
The latest reports suggest the protest is again on the move through the streets of DC, though it’s unclear how many demonstrators have cleared the area around the White House.
At one point during the action, a minor skirmish broke out with police as protesters attempted to tear down barricades, but the spat appears to have resolved without any arrests or major injuries.
Transcripts of conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak show that incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was looking out for US interests and sought Russian help against terrorists, while the FBI framed him.
Flynn and Kislyak spoke several times in December 2016 and January 2017, during the presidential transition. Within days of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the FBI interviewed Flynn with an intent – as shown by recently published documents – to catch him in a perjury trap. After a description of his call with Kislyak was leaked to the Washington Post, Flynn was accused of misleading the White House about the calls and pressured to resign.
Those invested in the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theory have claimed for years that Flynn discussed easing US sanction against Moscow.
Actual transcripts of the calls, made public on Friday by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), paint a drastically different picture. They show Flynn asking Moscow to not play the game of “tit-for-tat” escalation triggered by outgoing President Barack Obama’s expulsion of Russian diplomats, that would have “boxed in” the incoming president – and seeking to work together with Russia against “a common threat in the Middle East,” which from the context appears to be a reference to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists.
“Do not allow this administration to box us in, right now, okay?” Flynn tells Kislyak in a call on December 29, 2016, asking Russia to make its response “reciprocal.” He doesn’t want to create a situation where “everybody's got to go back and forth and everybody's got to be the tough guy here, you know?”
“We don't need that right now,” Flynn says. “We need cool heads to prevail, and uh, and we need to be very steady about what we're going to do because we have absolutely a common uh. threat in the Middle East right now.”
Two days later, on December 31, Kislyak informs Flynn that their conversation “was taken into account” in Moscow. In fact, President Vladimir Putin decided not to retaliate at all, saying he didn’t want to ruin the holidays for American diplomats and their families.
Flynn called this decision “wise.” Kislyak then said something that would turn out to be prophetic – that Russia judged these actions by the Obama administration to be aimed not just against Moscow, but against Trump.
“And I just wanted to tell you that we found that these actions have targeted not only against Russia, but also against the president-elect… and with all our rights to respond we have decided not to act now because, it's because people are dissatisfied with the loss of elections and, and it’s very deplorable,” the ambassador said.
— Margot Cleveland (@ProfMJCleveland) May 29, 2020
The events that unfolded proved Kislyak correct. The pretext for the FBI and DOJ to go after Flynn was that he supposedly violated the Logan Act – an archaic law banning ordinary Americans from conducting foreign policy, but which did not apply to him as the incoming presidential adviser anyway. Instead, what the transcripts show is that the outgoing administration was seeking to sabotage the incoming one.
On January 4, 2017, FBI agent Peter Strzok – who had previously vowed to “stop” Trump from getting elected in texts with colleague and lover Lisa Page – improperly ordered the FBI background investigation of Flynn to stay open. The following day, FBI chief James Comey went to the White House and discussed investigating Flynn with Obama personally. On that same day, January 5, the president’s chief of staff sent a request to the NSA to “unmask” Flynn. All of this was revealed only a month ago, in documents presented as evidence in the trial of Flynn for allegedly lying about the calls.
Russia eventually retaliated only in July 2017, when a Republican-majority Congress overrode Trump and passed a toxic sanctions bill based entirely on unsubstantiated ‘Russiagate’ claims of meddling in the presidential election. Just as Flynn feared, this would trigger a chain of “tit for tat” expulsions and closures that left both countries short of diplomatic staff – and cut off all avenues of further cooperation against IS, for peace in Syria, or anything else.

At least 30 protesters in New York City were arrested after clashing with police over the death of an African-American man in Minneapolis earlier this week, as NYC mayor Bill de Blasio blamed the killing on racism.
Dozens of people were taken into custody at Union Square in Manhattan on Thursday evening, local media reported. After breaking up that demonstration, the NYPD moved to check reports of other protests near the police headquarters and City Hall.
Protesters reportedly threw bottles and trash cans at police, and one officer was injured.

Earlier on Thursday, de Blasio tweeted that Floyd was “murdered in broad daylight,” adding, “If George was white, he would be alive right now.”
I’ve seen the video. I am horrified. George Floyd was murdered in broad daylight and the man who killed him was a police officer — and that officer didn't seem to care at all that he was taking a man's life.
Video that emerged earlier this week showed Floyd telling officers arresting him in Minneapolis that he couldn’t breathe, as one of them was kneeling on his neck. By the time an ambulance arrived, he showed no signs of life.
All four of the officers involved were fired from the Minneapolis PD, but activists have called for them to be arrested and charged with murder. Protests in the Twin Cities turned violent on Wednesday, as rioters torched and looted several stores near the 3rd Police Precinct.
The expansion of protests to New York follows Wednesday’s incident in Los Angeles, California – where demonstrators tried to block a freeway and attacked a police cruiser.
Minnesota has since called up the National Guard to “ensure safety” of protesters, while public transportation in Minneapolis and St. Paul was shut down to contain the unrest.

The US could carry out a live nuclear test within “months” should the president request it, a senior Pentagon official said, suggesting “geopolitical issues” – presumably referring to Moscow and Beijing – could prompt the order.
Though Washington has not altered its official stance on nuclear tests – which have been on pause for nearly three decades – that could change “rapidly,” the acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear Matters Drew Walter told an online forum hosted by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies on Tuesday.
“If the president directed – because of a technical issue or a geopolitical issue – the system to go test, I think it would happen relatively rapidly,” Walter said.
A very quick test with limited diagnostics [could occur] within months.
The comment follows last week’s report in the Washington Post about an “ongoing conversation” in the White House over whether to carry out the first US live nuclear test since 1992. One senior official told the paper that a test could send a message to Russia and China and serve as a bargaining chip in arms control talks – likely the “geopolitical issue” hinted at by Walter. Despite the decades-long moratorium, a bomb test would technically not be illegal under international law, as the US never bothered to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty.
The New START treaty, a flagship nuclear arms control pact which limits the number of strategic nuclear weapons the US and Russia can deploy, is set to expire next year. Though Russia has signaled willingness to renew the agreement – even offering to place some of its newer weapons under its limitations – the US has dragged its feet, insisting on negotiating a new treaty that would include China. The lofty aim would dramatically complicate negotiations, however. Given that its arsenal is some ten times smaller than Washington’s, China is not eager to join the agreement, but the US has nonetheless kept up the demand.
Last week, the top US arms control envoy Marshall Billingslea rehashed the proposal, calling on Moscow to “bring China to the negotiating table.” While he warned against a “full-blown arms race,” Billingslea also vowed the US could spend any adversary “into oblivion,” deeming it a “tried and true” strategy. The threat came just hours after the US announced it would trash the Open Skies Treaty with Russia, a major confidence-building measure between the two countries – though that didn’t deter the envoy from arguing that Moscow couldn’t be trusted to uphold agreements.
Despite the public opposition to an “arms race” however, US officials and policies continue to push in the opposite direction. As the administration reportedly mulls a new bomb test, Washington has embarked on a $1.2 trillion nuclear modernization effort, while fielding its first batch of low-yield submarine-launched warheads in February.
Moreover, the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review significantly lowered the threshold for the use of the bomb, even suggesting a nuclear response over a cyber attack.

Covid-19 has claimed over 100,000 lives in the United States, the latest figures show, marking another dark milestone in the pandemic – which has been increasingly politicized in the run-up to the November presidential election.
The US death toll now stands at 100,276, according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University, adding some 1,401 new fatalities in the last 24 hours. Just shy of 1.7 million people have been infected by the lethal virus nationwide.
As deaths crossed the 100,000 mark, former Vice President and 2020 Democratic hopeful Joe Biden issued a pre-recorded video response online. While the post was meant to share in the country’s grief, Biden did not miss out on an opportunity to score political points against his electoral rival, President Donald Trump.
There are moments in our history so grim, so heart-rending, that they're forever fixed in each of our hearts as shared grief. Today is one of those moments. 100,000 lives have now been lost to this virus.
“It’s made all the worse by knowing that this is a fateful milestone we should have never reached – that could have been avoided,” he said, citing a study that found up to 36,000 lives could have been saved “if the administration had acted just one week earlier … and did what it had to do.”

The coronavirus face mask game has hit a new height – or rather low – at a post office in Ukraine, where a woman without the protective gear instead chose to strip off her panties and wear them on her face to comply with the law.
Captured by a CCTV camera at a Nova Poshta (New Post) office in Ukraine’s capital of Kiev, the salacious video surfaced online late on Monday evening. The footage shows a woman without a protective face mask – which are now mandatory across the country – as she speaks with an office clerk. Confronted about having no face covering, the woman unexpectedly snapped, brusquely peeling off her pants and underwear right in front of the post workers and bewildered customers waiting in line.
She then placed the undergarments on her head – maskwise – before putting her trousers back on as if nothing happened. The DIY ‘face mask’ apparently checked out with the employees, who continued business as normal and eventually serviced the woman.
The bizarre stunt was confirmed by the post service to local media, and somewhat surprisingly, the company seemed quite understanding about the incident, saying it “by no means condemns the behavior of the client” and that it won’t report her to the police. The New Post said the woman was offered a free face mask when she entered the office, yet she refused to use it, sticking to a more familiar piece of cloth instead.
The only person to land in hot water over the incident is the employee who leaked the scandalous security footage, as the company deemed it a breach of its “information security” policies. The New Post is currently considering dismissal for the cheeky worker.

A bizarre robbery attempt at a jewelry store in Brazil has been captured on film, in which a disabled man held a cashier at gunpoint – clutching the weapon with his feet. The would-be thief was eventually brought to heel.
The unusual incident unfolded in the Brazilian town of Canela on Monday. Security camera footage of the ill-fated heist shows a wheelchair-bound, medical mask-clad man rolling into the jewelry shop before trying to rob it.

According to local media, the 19-year-old suspect handed a note to the cashier, instructing him to stay calm and fork over the cash. But apparently interpreting the demand to be some sort of joke, the store clerk ignored the disabled criminal.
The attacker – who also happens to be mute – then produced a gun to reinforce his written statement and prove it was no prank. As the man’s arms do not work, he grasped the gun with his feet, at one point even cocking the weapon with his lower limbs to drive the point home further.
Still, the robbery attempt was unsuccessful, as police were soon called to the scene to apprehend the suspect, who apparently didn’t make it very far. Apart from his gun – which turned out to be a plastic toy – the man had also stashed a large kitchen knife in his wheelchair.
The suspect was promptly released after the booking, as law enforcement deemed him an unlikely flight risk, given his condition. He now faces charges for attempted robbery.
The colossal space rock that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago collided with Earth at the perfect angle for death and destruction, shrouding the planet in a catastrophic “nuclear winter,” a new study has found.
The fearsome event that exterminated some three-quarters of all life on Earth was especially deadly thanks to the asteroid’s flight path, according to researchers at Imperial College London, who ran 3D simulations of the Chicxulub impact to better understand its apocalyptic aftermath. Their findings were published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday.
“The asteroid strike unleashed an incredible amount of climate-changing gases into the atmosphere, triggering a chain of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs,” said Gareth Collins of the Imperial College, who headed up the research team. “This was likely worsened by the fact that it struck at one of the deadliest possible angles.”
For the dinosaurs, the worst-case scenario is exactly what happened.
The asteroid hurdled to Earth at a steep angle of around 60 degrees, maximizing the amount of gas and “hazardous debris” launched into the upper atmosphere at the moment of collision – “the very thing that led to a nuclear winter,” Collins said. Kicking up a thick blanket of dust and smoke, the impact blackened the ancient skies, blotting out the sun and sending temperatures plummeting to inhospitable levels. Many of the organisms that survived the initial explosion perished in the artificial winter.
The scientists combined collision models with geological data from the impact site – located in modern-day Chicxulub, Mexico, which gave the 200 kilometer-wide crater its name – creating a 3D simulation of the event and its after effects for the first time.
“Despite being buried beneath nearly a kilometre of sedimentary rocks, it is remarkable that geophysical data reveals so much about the crater structure – enough to describe the direction and angle of the impact,” said Dr Auriol Rae of the University of Freiburg, a co-author on the study.
Previous studies have modeled the impact, but only looked at its early stages, rather than the chain of events it set off. Other research has also theorized that the asteroid came in at approximately 30 degrees, but the latest findings may offer a better explanation for why the event was so deadly, suggesting that a collision at a shallower or steeper angle would have been much less destructive.
