US declares public health emergency over coronavirus, limits flights from China to 7 cities

The US has declared an ongoing coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency, limiting points of entry to incoming Chinese flights and banning from entry some foreign nationals who traveled to China in the last two weeks.

“I have today declared that coronavirus presents a public health emergency in the United States,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said, announcing the measure on Friday. He stressed that the move was to “complement the work of China and the World Health Organization” that declared a global health crisis on Thursday.

The death toll from the novel virus, which originated in China, has leaped to 249, as it spread to over 20 countries, including the US.

Under the emergency, any US citizens who traveled to China’s Hubei province, where the virus had originated, would be subject to “up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine,” Azar said.

Feast in time of plague? Trump official says China coronavirus is good for US economy

However, he noted that those US citizens who were in China, but outside Hubei, would face less harsh restrictions. They will have to go though “proactive entry health screening at the select number of ports of entry” and observe “up to 14 days of monitored self-quarantine” instead.

Only seven airports were designated as ports of entry for US-bound flights from China. These are Atlanta, Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and the O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, acting deputy secretary of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli announced.

Except for immediate family of either US citizens or US permanent residents, all other aliens who visited China over the previous 14 days will be turned away as they attempt to entry the US for the duration of the emergency, Azar said.

Washington’s new travel restrictions come after a first person-to-person transmission of coronavirus was registered on the US soil. A Chicago man had contracted the flu-like 2019-nCoV from his wife, who had recently traveled to Wuhan, Hubei.

A seventh confirmed coronavirus case in the US was reported in Northern California on Friday, when a man tested positive for the virus after having traveled to China. In addition, dozens of Americans who were recently evacuated from Wuhan on a special-purpose charter plane, are currently being monitored, along with scores of other possible cases across at least 26 US states.

China condemns ‘truly mean’ US travel warning, as coronavirus runs rampant

US efforts to curb the spread of the virus by imposing limits on air travel did not sit well with Beijing. Noting that the WHO urged countries to avoid travel restrictions, Chinese Foreign Ministry slammed the US crackdown as “truly mean.”

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross also raised some eyebrows earlier, when he suggested that the outbreak could benefit the US economy by speeding up the return of jobs from Asia to North America.

Ukraine’s ex-prosecutor who led Burisma investigation demands criminal probe of Biden

Former top prosecutor of Ukraine, Viktor Shokin, has filed a criminal complaint with the state authorities, claiming former US Vice President Joe Biden strong-armed Kiev into firing him in order to stop the Burisma investigation.

In the complaint Shokin sent to the Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) on Monday, the former prosecutor requests that Biden be charged with “interference with the activities of a law enforcement officer.” The document was obtained by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Shokin urged the SBI to kick-start a pre-trial investigation into the alleged crime committed by Biden, who he claims was illegally pressuring Ukrainian officials into ousting him from office while using a $1 billion loan guarantee as a leverage.

Joe Biden’s past strong-arming in Ukraine is coming back to haunt him

Noting that Biden, in his official capacity as the second-in-command in the US political hierarchy, repeatedly visited Ukraine in late 2015 and early 2016 to persuade high-ranking officials to remove him, Shokin argued that “as a result, he curtailed an objective investigation criminal proceedings on the facts of unlawful activities of persons associated with the company Burisma Holdings Limited (Cyprus), including the son of the specified high-ranking official [Biden’s son Hunter, who sat on the company’s board from 2014 till 2019].”

Shokin specifically refers to the recently released documentary series ‘UkraineGate: Inconvenient facts,’ by French investigative journalist Olivier Berruyer, which challenges the Western media claims that the corruption investigation into Burisma was “dormant” at the time Biden was lobbying for Shokin’s dismissal.

Berruyer, founder of the popular anti-corruption blog Les Crises, said that he collected documents that show that the investigation into the gas company was in full swing at the time.

Shokin’s own words to that effect have receive only a passing mention, or no mention at all in the mainstream US media outlets, however. In a recent interview with ABC News, Shokin said that his office was handling six investigation into Burisma at the time of his resignation. However, ABC kept that part of the interview under wraps – leaving the American public essentially in the dark about the status of the probe.

UkraineGate: MSM believed Biden’s narrative, but documentary reveals ousted prosecutor had 6 cases against Burisma

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump was impeached in the House of Representatives and is on trial in the Senate on charges of “abuse of power,” after Democrats accused him of pressuring Kiev into reviving the Burisma probe last summer by withholding US military aid.

Biden openly boasted at a 2018 Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) event that in March 2016 he gave then Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko a six-hour deadline to fire Shokin or he would withdraw $1 billion in US loan guarantees. Poroshenko subsequently dismissed Shokin on April 3. It was reported that a day after Yuriy Lutsenko was appointed new prosecutor general, Biden called Poroshenko to congratulate him and to announce that the US would greenlight the aid.

‘Take it or leave it’: Trump’s empire-style plan to bring war rather than peace to Middle East

US President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century” has turned out to be nothing but another colonial empire-style plan ignoring not just the interests of the Palestinians but the UN decisions as well, analysts told RT.

The peace plan that Trump said would “greatly benefit” both Israelis and Palestinians was little more than a manifestation of Washington’s arrogance, the experts agree. It shows that the US believes it can single-handedly decide sensitive issues of international politics that usually fall under the jurisdiction of the UN, such as the status of Jerusalem.

US ‘deal of the century’ for M. East biased against Palestinians, Washington ignored UN resolutions – adviser to Iranian president

“In going so far as decreeing Jerusalem’s status, the Deal of the Century clearly has echoes of the 19th century’s age of empires which created the current impasse in the Middle East that inspires recurring terrorism,” said Afshin Rattansi, host of RT’s Going Underground.

His guest, former ambassador UK to the Palestinian Authority Sir Richard Dalton, noted that Trump’s unilateral decision on Jerusalem’s status is nothing short of “de facto violation of 2017 emergency UN resolution” and could even be seen by the international body as a “flagrant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

Yet the Trump administration apparently believes that it has “the right to unilaterally defy” all these international norms, since it openly endorses Israel’s illegal annexations, the diplomat added.

The US proposal is extremely unlikely to bring even a hint of peace to the Middle East, since Washington was apparently more concerned about pleasing its allies in Tel Aviv rather than offering a genuinely feasible solution to the decades-old conflict.

Netanyahu says Israel is offering Palestinians ‘conditional’ & ‘limited’ sovereignty, new capital will be at Abu Dis

Palestinians “are being presented with a deal that was made exclusively between the US and Israel” and hardly has any regard for their interests at all, said former US diplomat Jim Jatras, adding that the deal looks more like an ultimatum than an agreement.

“Like everything else in this so-called plan, it is ‘take it or leave it’," Jatras said. "That is what the US and Israel will offer you and if you do not take it, they will take more. I think that is why Trump said it was Palestinians’ last chance.”

Either they will settle to the deal offered to them or they will get nothing.

That is precisely why this proposal has been a “non-starter” from the very beginning, believes former Pentagon official Michael Maloof.

“If you are going to have an agreement you will need both sides to go along with it. Right now I do not see Palestinians going along with it,” he told RT.

Jatras believes that getting Palestinians to sign the deal might not be the goal of this proposal, which opens the way for Israel to further annex Palestinian territories in the West Bank like the Jordan Valley, with an approval from Washington.

“I expect that to happen fairly soon. Trump said that the US will then recognize these annexations as they recognized the annexation of the Golan Heights,” he said.

Trump ‘Vision’ for Israeli-Palestinian peace is dead on arrival; maybe that’s by design

The pompous unveiling of the peace plan was “the latest act of political theater” by Trump, who has honed his double-speak skills by confusing and manipulating the American people and now hopes to repeat the same trick with the Palestinians, American comedian Lee Camp told RT.

“For decades he has lied, reneged, and stolen – and his 'Two State Solution' is no different. He and Netanyahu were joined at the announcement by ultra-Zionist billionaire Sheldon Adelson and many others who have pushed for and celebrated an endless array of war crimes,” Camp noted, adding that the Palestinians were nowhere to be seen.

The Palestinian people were not a part of this process. They are being asked to surrender what remains of their rights and sovereignty.

The consensus across the board is that this “deal of the century” could actually bring war to the Middle East, not peace. Palestinians already fiercely oppose this proposal and attempts to shove it down their throats would only be met with more resistance, potentially leading to a full-blown conflict.

“Palestinians are already threatening a new Intifada as a result,” Maloof said. “It would create a whole new dimension of violence in the region.”

Never-Trumper strategist launches #ILefttheGOP campaign just in time for Senate impeachment votes

Disaffected ex-Republicans are sharing their stories on social media as the seemingly-unbreakable two-party duopoly approaches peak unpopularity with American voters with less than a year to go before the 2020 election.

The hashtag #ILefttheGOP was trending on Monday as self-described former Republicans shared what made them exit party ranks - whether to join the Democrats, or to vote independently. It was created by former Republican strategist Cheri Jacobus, who left the party after a disastrous encounter with the president’s 2016 campaign and has been a strident “never-Trumper" ever since.

Perhaps predictably, many cited US President Donald Trump as their reason for leaving the party.

But plenty of other reasons came up - from endless war to religious hypocrisy to…Hollywood films.

Brandon Straka, former Democrat and creator of the #WalkAway movement, cried foul, accusing “the left” of “trying to copy #WalkAway” and implying Jacobus was running a fake campaign.

Others agreed the hashtag looked fishy,

or tried to reason with its proponents by pointing out ways in which the Democratic Party was worse.

While a few ex-GOPers seemed to have wasted no time jumping from the frying pan of one party into the fire of another, adding a cringeworthy “vote blue no matter who!” to their tweeted testimonials, not everyone who has left the clutches of the Republicans has rushed headlong into the tentacles of the Democrats.

Both parties are experiencing near-record levels of unpopularity. A Gallup poll from earlier this month showed just 27 percent of Americans identify as Republican and just 27 percent as Democrats. Some 45 percent identify as Independents - approaching the highest-ever percentage of 47 percent, most recently recorded in late 2014. Asked whether they leaned more toward the Democratic or Republican parties, independents were almost evenly split, with 46 percent leaning Democratic to the 45 that leaned Republican.

Impeachment: Democrats cry ‘dictator’ while Team Trump cries ‘election interference’

The existence of an increasingly vocal independent segment of the American voting populace doesn’t mean that an anti-Trump group wouldn’t have good reason to launch a divide-and-conquer campaign against the GOP at this time. Jacobus is a political strategist, after all. With the vote on whether or not to remove Trump from office looming large in a Republican-dominated Senate, the anti-Trump contingent needs to convince at least 20 Republican senators to break rank with the party if it actually wants to remove the president from office - more, if any Democrat votes not to remove him. Their job becomes much easier if they can convince Republicans that the president is damaging their party by driving voters away.

Nakers star LeBron? MSNBC botches Kobe Bryant’s team name, BBC shows footage of another NBA legend in rush to report his death

MSNBC and the BBC are getting heavy criticism after the former found an anchor accused of dropping the n-word when she “stuttered” covering Bryant’s death and the latter busted showing footage of the wrong player.

While reporting on the Sunday morning helicopter crash in southern California that led to the death of 41-year-old Bryant, MSNBC anchor Allison Morris stumbled over her words when mistaking the basketball team Bryant played on for 20 years until his retirement in 2016.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant dies in helicopter crash aged 41

Many accused the anchor of saying the n-word instead of Lakers, but she insists she did not. Video of the gaffe got people not only mocking Morris, but calling for her to be fired.

Morris took to Twitter to defend herself by saying she got the basketball teams the Knicks and Lakers mixed up in her head and she “stuttered.”

'Please God no, it can't be true': Sports world in shock after death of 'global icon' Kobe Bryant

“Earlier today, while reporting on the tragic news of Kobe Bryant’s passing, I unfortunately stuttered on air, combining the names of the Knicks and the Lakers to say ‘Nakers.’ Please know I did not & would NEVER use a racist term. I apologize for the confusion this caused,” she tweeted.

Replies to Morris’ tweet included many saying that she was simply making an excuse. Bryant played for the Los Angeles Lakers for his entire 20 year career.

In another media gaffe in Kobe coverage highlighted by social media, the BBC ran footage of LeBron James while talking about Bryant.

James, 35, currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers and is six years younger than Bryant, who retired from basketball in 2016.

“Dear BBC News, you appear to have  inserted clips of LeBron James into your tribute package for Kobe Bryant for no apparent reason,” reporter Sachini Nakrani tweeted in reaction to the footage.

“Cannot believe the BBC-  reporting on Kobe Bryant’s death but showing video footage of LeBron James. If you know you know,” added journalist Samiri Sawlani.

Voice of mummified Egyptian priest heard for first time in 3,000 years

A mummified Egyptian priest dead for millennia has been granted the gift of gab after scientists used 3D printed vocal cords to recreate his voice, fulfilling the priest’s dying wish to be heard from the afterlife.

After some 3,000 years of silence, the mummy – named Nesyamun – is no longer tongue-tied thanks to a British research team, which painstakingly mapped out the priest’s well-preserved vocal tract for replication in a 3D printer. The team published its findings in Scientific Reports on Thursday, along with a clip showcasing Nesyamun’s new voice – here’s what he had to say:

The first successful attempt to artificially reproduce the voice of a deceased person, the project has provided a “unique opportunity to hear the sound of someone long dead,” said Joann Fletcher, a professor of archaeology at the University of York and co-author of the study.

A scan of Nesyamun's voice box (above), and a cross-section of the 3D printed model created from the scans. ©  Scientific Reports

Hailing from the city of Thebes, Nesyamun last roamed the earth around 1100 BC, living under the reign of pharaoh Ramses XI and fulfilling his priestly duties at the Karnak temple complex. It was his “express wish” to be heard from beyond the grave, Fletcher told the BBC.

It's actually written on his coffin – it was what he wanted... In a way, we've managed to make that wish come true.

While the team has only been able to reproduce one vowel-like sound so far, in the future, the researchers will attempt to “generate words and string those words together to make sentences,” Fletcher said, adding “we're hoping we can create a version of what he would have said at the temple at Karnak.”

‘Like a Jenga game’: Pilots shred Boeing as it prepares to resume 737 MAX production ASAP, citing ‘positive feedback’ from pilots

Boeing hopes to resume production of its grounded 737 MAX jet months before regulators approve it to fly again, CEO Dave Calhoun has announced, touting positive feedback even as pilots unions shred the company as untrustworthy.

Brushing aside rumors that the MAX could be grounded indefinitely, Calhoun told reporters on Wednesday that production would start up “well before” mid-year, when the company hopes to secure regulatory approval to resume flights for the ill-fated aircraft, grounded worldwide after a series of crashes which killed 346 people.

“I believe in this airplane,” Calhoun said, citing positive assessments from pilots.

However, after a raft of delays, setbacks and embarrassing disclosures involving the MAX – including internal communications strongly suggesting the company lied to regulators – trust among pilots appears to be plumbing new depths.

‘Designed by clowns & supervised by monkeys’: Boeing employee shreds 737 MAX in internal messages

“It’s like a Jenga game, [trust] gets higher and higher, and then it tumbles down,” Dennis Tajer, spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, which represents 15,000 American Airlines pilots, told the Financial Times.

The internal communications, which were released by Boeing following an internal probe, were “beyond our worst nightmares,” Tajer added, comparing the messages to “a poorly written screenplay that no one would believe – but it happened.”

The company also enjoys “zero trust” from the 10,000 members of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, which is suing Boeing, according to union head Jon Weaks. The association brought a suit against the company last year, accusing it of rushing a faulty aircraft “into the hands of trusting pilots.”

Confidence isn’t only rock bottom in the US. Jon Horne, who heads up the 40,000-member European Cockpit Association, said trust in Boeing was “unequivocally” at an all-time low, adding that it was not the role of pilots to do “PR stunts” for the company with rosy testimonies.

Boeing announced that production would halt for the MAX earlier this month, following several cutbacks, leaving some 400 undelivered planes sitting in company storage facilities, with another 387 complete aircraft grounded at airports worldwide.
