As Hong Kong’s anti-government movement continues to rage, RT looks into what sparked the unrest, the dire social inequality problems that fuel it, and how forces in Washington exploited this public discontent for their own ends.
RT America’s Michele Greenstein, who personally witnessed brutal clashes and spoke to key figures on both sides of the barricades, paints a comprehensive picture of the protests. The contentious extradition bill, which was the catalyst for the uprising this summer served just as a pretext, while its nature was grossly misinterpreted. It doesn’t mean that the islanders – suffocated by prosaic issues like crippling prices and poor housing conditions, rather than lack of ‘democracy’ – have nothing to be angry about.
Yet the demonstrators never challenged Hong Kong’s own authorities over this social inequality, directing their rage solely at mainland China – all while destroying their own city and virtually begging the US to sanction it, just to hurt Beijing.
With young and progressive leaders of the Hong Kong uprising cheered as noble ‘pro-democracy’ warriors and welcomed in the US with open arms, Washington isn’t even trying to hide the fact that the protests have been high-jacked to demonize and destabilize its main economic rival – China.
“The original movement has been eroded. Now it’s just about opposition to Chinese government and the subversion of state power,” says Stanley Ng Chau-pei, President of the Federation of Trade Unions, by far the largest labor and political group in Hong Kong.
It’s a ‘color revolution

Known as the Russian national tree, birch also works well as a taser, apparently – at least this is how these local policemen tackled a violent knifeman, whom they didn’t want to shoot because they “pitied” the erratic man.
Starting off as a typical ‘Meanwhile in Russia’ video, the undated clip, which surfaced on social media this week, quickly turns into a tense and thought-provoking standoff. The video begins in the middle of an altercation between three traffic police officers and a man dual-wielding a knife and a traffic baton – which he apparently yanked from the cops.
The profanity-filled exchange, possibly filmed by another officer, has the traffic police demanding that the man laid down his arms while threatening to use deadly force. One cop is indeed holding the knifeman at gunpoint.
But the man, clearly acting erratically, keeps advancing while waving his knife and shouting: “Come on, shoot! I don’t give a f**k.”
The officers are heard briefly discussing firing a warning shot and then shooting the man – but luckily for the knifeman, none turn out to be trigger-happy.
“I just pity the fool,” one of the officers says, explaining why he would not fire.
The situation seems deadlocked, but it suddenly resolves in a most unexpected and bizarre fashion. The camera shifts to one the cops running towards the perpetrator with a huge – at least, two-meter-long – birch log and striking him from behind.
While far from dealing a decisive blow, the troublemaker seems momentarily stunned by such an unconventional non-lethal weapon used against him – bringing another officer a chance to jump on the knifeman from behind and bring him to the ground.
It’s unclear what happened next, and any more information about the video is yet to emerge, but the scene has already triggered some reaction on YouTube.
“Armed police and they still take him down with a log. Impressive. It shows how good the training is to not kill at the first opportunity. They are clearly trained at de-escalation,” David Lazarus wrote.
“Good for them! They recognized that man was nuts and didn't kill him. I hope he gets whatever help he needs,” another commenter said.
“I think some cops in America should take a cue from these guys,” Chris wrote, while a smorgasbord of other comments fantasized what would have happened to the man in the US.

The man who carried out a grisly stabbing spree on the London Bridge has been identified by police as Usman Khan. He had been convicted of terrorism and was attending a social justice event.
"This individual was known to authorities, having been convicted in 2012 for terrorism offences,” Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu told reporters shortly after midnight on Saturday.
He was released from prison in December 2018 on licence and clearly, a key line of enquiry now is to establish how he came to carry out this attack.

Cyprus police are deepening their probe into a high-tech ‘spy van’ spotted on the island, owned by an Israeli surveillance firm and capable of hacking into any smartphone from a kilometer away. Its exact purpose remains unknown.
The mysterious vehicle first piqued curiosities after it featured in a Forbes report showing off its sophisticated surveillance set up, raising questions about how the gear was being used.
Owned by WiSpear, an Israeli spy firm registered in Cyprus, the high-tech van contains some $9 million in snooping gear which can breach virtually any smartphone application – including WhatsApp and Facebook messages, texts, calls and contacts – according to WiSpear founder Tal Dillian.
A 24-year veteran of Israel’s military intelligence service, Dillian bragged about his company making “a lot of money” from the widening gap between spying tech and encryption, adding that he only expected more cash to roll in as governments struggled to find “back doors” to digital messaging apps.
A probe launched earlier this month into whether the van violated any privacy laws was widened on Thursday, when Attorney General Costas Clerides announced he would appoint an independent investigator to the case, which continues to perplex authorities.
After a search of WiSpear’s headquarters in the city of Larnaca earlier in November, the van was seized and remains in police custody, though it is still unclear whether any additional evidence was turned up.
President Nicos Anastasiades said he would “never tolerate” breaches of any citizen’s privacy after a meeting last week on the matter with the country’s justice minister, chief of police and the head of the hard-left AKEL party, which first raised concerns about the vehicle.
WiSpear has denied all wrongdoing and insists the van was not used for spying purposes, nor rented out to any third party, arguing the firm is the victim of a “witch hunt.”
“We would like to restate that the car has not been active within Cypriot territory other than for demo and field tests purposes only, solely on company-owned devices,” the company said in a statement last week.

The government of Hong Kong said a bill recently signed into law by US President Donald Trump backing ongoing protests in the territory will only inflame the situation, and slammed Washington for meddling in the city’s affairs.

A senior Trump administration official who once called for a “tactical” nuclear strike on Afghanistan now helps to oversee arms control at the State Department, where he will manage Washington’s weapons treaties.
Frank Wuco, formerly of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was recently made a senior adviser at the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control – which is tasked to address the “threat posed by weapons of mass destruction” – according to a report in the Washington Post.
Wuco’s idea of “arms control” may not be quite what the bureau has in mind, however, apparently preferring to “control” arms straight to their target. In a 2016 radio appearance, when asked why Washington hadn’t simply turned Syria and Iran into “glass,” Wuco casually suggested how he would send a “message” to America’s adversaries given the chance.
I think if we were going to have done that, my preference would have been to have dropped a couple of low-yield tactical nuclear weapons over Afghanistan the day after 9/11 to send a definite message to the world that they had screwed up in a big way.
President Donald Trump himself has previously mused about “using nuclear” in Afghanistan, but later dismissed the idea, arguing that he would prefer not to “kill 10 million people.”
It’s unclear exactly when Wuco was transferred from the DHS to his current role at the ACB, but an anonymous State Department official said he had been there at least since August.
Before his time in government, Wuco made his name peddling unorthodox theories in conservative media – once claiming that former CIA director John Brennan had converted to Islam while serving in Saudi Arabia – and is known for other quirks as well. As a private security consultant, he created an alter ego he named “Fuad Wasul,” delivering presentations in character to provide a “first-hand account of what inspires and motivates the jihadist.”
While the State Department’s conception of “arms control” has seldom meant more than ensuring Washington’s nuclear superiority over much of the planet, Wuco’s presence in the bureau can’t bode well for its own stated purpose, managing “threats.”
As the Trump administration zaps one arms control agreement after another – having already undone the INF and ABM treaties, with eyes on New START – Cold War-era protections against nuclear conflict are eroding, and Wuco’s presence does not seem likely to contribute to reversing that trend.

President Donald Trump has approved legislation backing Hong Kong’s ‘pro-democracy’ protest movement, disregarding Beijing’s repeated warnings for Washington to mind its own business and stop meddling in China's internal affairs.
Dubbed the 'Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act,' the bill blazed through both houses of Congress earlier this month with virtually unanimous consent from lawmakers. In addition to threatening sanctions over human rights violations, the law requires the State Department to “certify” once a year whether Hong Kong enjoys sufficient “autonomy,” though exactly how officials will quantify that remains unclear.
Despite harsh condemnations from Beijing, the president said he passed the bills with his Chinese counterpart in mind.
Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and PROTECT Hong Kong Act, legislation supporting the Hong Kong protestors, were both signed into law by President Trump today per the White House. pic.twitter.com/bBqLJ9Ii0j
“I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong,” Trump said in a statement on Wednesday, adding they are being enacted in the hope that leaders and representatives of China and Hong Kong “will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all.”
Trump did note that certain provisions of both acts interfered with the presidential power to conduct foreign policy under the US Constitution, and will be implemented with that in mind, but did not specify which ones.

The Democrats are desperately trying to remove President Donald Trump from office or at least win back the presidency in 2020. Yet, all their efforts are seemingly having the opposite effect, former congressman Ron Paul told RT.
Under the present circumstances, the impeachment would be a “total negative for the Democrats” as it would be “squelched in the Senate,” even if the Democrat-majority House approves it, Paul said on Tuesday.
More importantly, the whole process is apparently losing steam because people are “sick and tired” of the latest of many attempts to impeach Trump.
There is less enthusiasm for impeachment now than it was a week or so ago.
Support for Adam Schiff (D-California), who chairs the House Intelligence Committee and is leading the inquiry against Trump, is falling, Paul said. Schiff has seen even some fellow Democrats abandoning his cause, because they simply got “tired of all this
mess.”
“Democrats are in a bind on what to do about this,” the former congressman from Texas said, adding that if they drag this process further they might eventually end up hurting only themselves. “I believe they are losing this argument.”
The recent public hearings were a prime example of how the Democratic control over the whole process weakened the party’s own positions, according to Paul, because more people are looking at it and saying, “It is not quite fair, it is not right.”
According to Paul, there is no upside in this process for either Democrats or Republicans, locked as they are in a turf war instead of dealing with real issues that America is facing.
I do not think that we are dealing with those kinds of problems but there is a lot of grandstanding and political chicanery going on between the two political parties.
He believes that Congress and the executive branch would do better to focus on things like foreign policy, which he described as “poor.”
Ankara has reportedly been blackmailing NATO, refusing to sign the proposed defense plan for the Baltics and Poland unless the alliance officially recognizes Kurdish-led militia in northern Syria as a “terrorist group.”
Agreeing on a new NATO defense plan for the eastern European countries has escalated from a formality into a true diplomatic battle, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing four senior sources within the bloc.
“[The Turks) are taking eastern Europeans hostage, blocking approval of this military planning until they get concessions,” one of the sources said.
Turkey’s envoy had been instructed not to sign off the plan – which has to be unanimously approved by all the NATO members – until the alliance recognizes Syria’s People's Protection Units (YPG) as terrorists.
The YPG is the core group within the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia, which has recently became the target of a new Turkish incursion. While the group has been a long-standing US ally and fought against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Ankara regards it as an offshoot of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – regarded both by the US and Turkey as a terrorist organization.
Poland and the three Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – have solicited increased funding and military presence from NATO, arguing without evidence that they face an imminent threat of aggression from Russia.
The deadlock over the defense plan is threatening to spoil the planned festivities at NATO’s 70th anniversary summit in London. However, Ankara appears adamant that it will only green-light the plan if it receives concessions from the bloc.
“Everyone is criticizing them [the Turks], but if they give in, it will be at the cost of non-interference in their Syria strategy,” one of the sources said.
Turkey’s reported intransigence, if confirmed, only adds to NATO’s current woes, as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized alliance members for failing to live up to their budgetary commitments. Only seven of NATO’s 29 members are currently spending at least two percent of their GDP on the military – and while Poland and the Baltics are among them, Turkey is not.
However, Turkey has the second-largest military within the alliance, and occupies the strategic position on its eastern flank, in reach of both Russia and the Middle East. For all that, Ankara has had a rocky relationship with the US recently, due to Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems as well as its military operation in northern Syria.
Turkey might have taken Trump’s withdrawal of US troops as tacit approval for its ‘Operation Peace Spring,’ but Washington has maintained that the Kurdish-led Syrian militias are still its “allies” and repeatedly urged Ankara to show restraint in its assault against the SDF.

Actress Pamela Anderson has called on to Australia’s prime minister to pick up the phone and appeal to US President Donald Trump to free Julian Assange, warning it his extradition would set a precedent harmful to all journalists.
The Australian national, founder of whistleblower website WikiLeaks, is looking at up to 175 years in prison under the Espionage Act if he is sent over to the US. He is currently in a UK jail as doctors and supporters are sounding alarm over his health - damaged by prison conditions, solitary confinement, and years of being locked inside the Ecuadorean embassy, where he had asylum.
Anderson characterized as “psychological torture” the way Assange was extracted from the embassy and put in maximum security prison, in a personal plea to PM Scott Morrison to “save an Australian hero” from the horrifying prospect of extradition to the US.
The Sydney Morning Herald obtained a transcript of Andersons’ speech that she was to deliver in the Australian Parliament House, but was unable to due to scheduling conflicts.
“Every Australian needs to be aware that if Julian Assange is extradited to the USA for publishing then every other journalist and publisher of facts on the internet is vulnerable to execution or 175 years' imprisonment for simply publishing facts that were delivered to him by whistleblowers,” Anderson said of the man who revealed to the world the civilian casualties of America’s wars in the Middle East.
The Hollywood star pointed out that Morrison’s predecessor did help another citizen - film director James Ricketson – who was in Cambodian prison on espionage charges. The current PM should do no less, and ought to pick up the phone to tell Trump and UK PM Boris Johnson “to do their part to save the people’s democratic right in the Western world.”
"He doesn’t want 'special treatment', he just wants to be treated like any other Australian citizen and journalist, he has not committed any crime for which a precedent in law stands," wrote Anderson.
The 'Baywatch' actress is not the only one who has raised the alarm over concern for Assange’s life. On Sunday, over 60 medical professionals from across the world voiced their concern over the physical and mental health of the publisher in an open letter to British Home Secretary Priti Patel.
The physicians pointed to the report of Nils Melzer, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, in which he claims that unless “the UK urgently changes course and alleviates his inhumane situation, Mr. Assange’s continued exposure to arbitrariness and abuse may soon end up costing his life.”

Would you prefer your car burnt or covered with feces? A Russian man got both when his fancy vehicle caught fire – and the first to the rescue was the driver of a poop truck.
Carrying a working extinguisher in your car is highly advisable – and, in fact, mandatory, in many countries – as it can save lives and/or your road vehicle from going up in flames. An unlucky driver in the Russian city of Samara learned that the hard way, when the front of his BMW X6 car began rapidly smoking on the road, while he apparently had nothing to put it out. It’s that or he simply didn’t have time to react.
Not to worry, as the help was close by: an entire truckload of liquid – just maybe not of the sort he was hoping for.
Footage of this literally crappy situation emerged on social media this weekend. The video shows the driver running around his burning car, while an operator of the vacuum truck generously douses it with brown goo.
While the viewers probably felt for the driver’s plight, they might want to be thankful videos still do not transfer smells in 2019. Many commenters weren’t that kind, though, making not-so-printable jokes and even chastising the man for driving around in a luxury car in Samara.
No one was injured in the incident, local media said, but whether the BMW was deemed salvageable after the unorthodox firefighting effort remains a mystery.
Curiously, a similar incident occurred in Russia last year, when a Good Samaritan honeywagon driver tried to extinguish a flaming dropside truck. The attempt was only partially successful, as the truck was left largely burnt out – as well as covered with waste.

Police and soldiers patrolled the streets of Bogota on Saturday following a rare overnight curfew imposed after massive protests against President Ivan Duque turned at times to violence.
A cinema in Birmingham descended into chaos after fracas involving some 100 people erupted amid reports that machete-wielding thugs were spotted in the crowd. A massive police operation followed.
Police were called around 5.35 pm local time to a Vue Cinema hall in Birmingham amid reports that a “group of people with machetes” was storming the Star City entertainment complex.
Videos of the incident have emerged on social media showing multiple police cars arriving at the scene.
Officers can be seen intervening to keep rival groups apart during the showdown.
Just came to see the new blue story film, standing in line for snacks when a fight breaks out behind my brother - worst thing is, it’s young girls fighting. Police brought batons, tasers and dogs out. Star city now closed pic.twitter.com/3NC4efYRyp
A number of police officers were assaulted as they moved in, and several people have been arrested. It is unclear if any machetes were recovered, though.
The disturbances broke out ahead of the Frozen screening at the cinema, as it was packed with children, dressed up as their favorites characters. A woman who said she was present at the cinema said in a Twitter post that the commotion originally began as a fight between “young girls.”
Kids are being killed in London daily so they decide to make a film and glorify it? Ridiculous! Families there to see Frozen and they have to witness these wannabe gangster clowns 🤦🏻♂️ disgrace #starcity
“Police brought batons, tasers and dogs out. Star city now closed," Rachael Allison tweeted, noting that she did not see any weapons.
Another witness described the melee as “one of the scariest moments” of her life.
“That's probably one of the scariest moments of my life. Me and my daughter were in a queue to watch frozen, loads of little kids there, all dressed up and everything, then these girls jumped on another girl and loads of these kids just started fighting,” she told Mirror Online.

A showdown between President Donald Trump and the US Navy may be shaping up over an attempt to expel a commando from the elite SEAL force. Vague statements and conflicting reports are adding to confusion about the case.
After the Navy announced that it would carry out a Trident review to consider expelling Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher from the SEALs earlier this week, Trump stepped in with a tweet, insisting that nothing of the sort would be happening.
“The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin,” the president said on Thursday. “This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!”
The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin. This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!
Gallagher was accused of war crimes during his 2017 deployment to Iraq – including stabbing a wounded prisoner and shooting at unarmed civilians – and was court-martialed a year later on seven charges. While he was ultimately cleared on the most serious allegations, he was sentenced to a demotion by one rank for posing for a photo with a corpse. That sentence was reversed last week by Trump, who defended Gallagher during and after his court-martial.
While several Navy and Defense officials told the New York Times they were under the impression the Trident review had approval from the White House, the president’s tweet on Thursday threw the matter into uncertainty, prompting the Navy to comment.
“The Navy follows the lawful orders of the President,” said its top spokesman, Rear Admiral Charles Brown. “We will do so in case of an order to stop the administrative review of SOC Gallagher's professional qualification. We are aware of the President's tweet and we are awaiting further guidance.”
Brown’s statement may have generated more questions than answers, however, as he did not specify whether the review had been officially paused and would only resume on the president’s say-so, or if the proceedings would only halt after an explicit order issued through the proper channels, rather than a presidential tweet.
This resulted in conflicting media reports, with NPR headlining a story to the effect that the review would “press on,” while other outlets took the same statement to mean the process had been “halted.”
Adding to the confusion, Navy Secretary Richard Spencer was quoted by Reuters on Friday as saying that he favored going ahead with Gallagher’s review, despite the president’s opposition.
“I believe the process matters for good order and discipline,” he told a reporter while at a conference in Halifax, Canada. Spencer did not shed any further light on whether the review was halted or proceeding, either.
In addition to reversing Gallagher’s demotion, Trump’s clemency order last Friday also pardoned two Army officers facing war crimes charges, one awaiting trial and the other already behind bars.

Vladimir Putin could’ve had his career smashed months before becoming Russian president, a former Kremlin official claims. He says an influential PM made two attempts to sack Putin from his top job at the Federal Security Service.
Putin was in charge of the FSB between September 1998 and May 1999. His breakneck career progress then saw him become the first deputy Prime Minister, then PM, and finally Russia’s caretaker President on December 31, 1999 – after Boris Yeltsin’s surprise resignation.
But the current president’s life story might have been quite different, claims the former head of Yeltsin’s administration, Valentin Yumashev. The high-level Kremlin official did so in a candid interview with a prominent Russian-American journalist Vladimir Pozner, livestreamed on YouTube on Friday, which focused on the behind-the-scenes cabinet drama of the late 1990s.
Back then, Putin headed the FSB while the influential Soviet and Russian diplomat Yevgeny Primakov was the Prime Minister. Primakov is perhaps best known in the West for canceling a state visit to the US in March 1999 and turning his plane around in the air over the Atlantic, in response to the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. In Russia, however, he was also regarded as Yeltsin’s possible successor. At one time, he became Putin’s de-facto arch-rival as he mulled running in the 2000 presidential election.
"He [Primakov] twice tried to sack Putin from the post of the FSB Director. Few people know that.”
However, Yeltsin would not allow Primakov to do so, Yumashev said without revealing any more details. From what he let slip about Yeltsin’s relationship with the strong-willed PM, the late Russian president apparently regarded Primakov as a bit too authoritarian and Soviet-style to become the nation’s new leader.
Another piece of the puzzle seems to be Yumashev's recollection of some of the phone calls with Putin in autumn 1998. He says the then-FSB director asked him to talk urgently about Primakov’s demands to impose his will on the security service - specifically, ordering Putin to spy on Grigory Yavlinsky, leader of the opposition party Yabloko.
Putin apparently said he was against such tactics, even vowing to resign if Yeltsin okayed placing a political opponent under surveillance, only for Yumashev to reassure him that the president was against this too.
Ultimately, Primakov withdrew from the presidential race and later even became Putin’s ally and trusted advisor. The veteran politician died in 2015, at the age of 85.
A monument to Primakov was unveiled outside the Foreign Ministry in Moscow earlier this month, with Putin calling him a “personality of a massive scale” in a speech he personally delivered at the ceremony.
