US President Donald Trump has again come under a media barrage after reports that he “pressed” Australia’s prime minister to assist in an investigation into the origins of Russiagate, which Canberra disputes.
In a report on Monday, the New York Times said the president “pushed” Austrialian Prime Minister Scott Morrison into cooperating with a Department of Justice (DOJ) probe tasked with looking into the origins of the ‘Russiagate’ investigation. While the Times itself acknowledges there was nothing “illegal [or] untoward” about the president’s request, the story posits similarities to Trump’s July call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, the fallout of which has transformed into a full-blown impeachment showdown in Washington.
Critics argue that, during the July call, the president threatened to withhold military aid in order to pressure Kiev into targeting former Vice President Joe Biden – an electoral rival – with an investigation. While a transcript of Trump’s conversation with Zelensky does not substantiate the claims of coercion, the Monday Times report suggests the call with Morrison was another example of a political shakedown spearheaded by the US president.
Much like Zelensky, who dispelled notions that he was “pressured” soon after the allegations arose, a spokesman for Morrison also threw cold water on the narrative, stating the Australian government was “ready to assist and cooperate” with the DOJ investigation and required no prodding.
#breaking from federal government spokesperson: "The Australian Government has always been ready to assist and cooperate with efforts that help shed further light on the matters under investigation. The PM confirmed this readiness once again in conversation with the President."
The fact that the Trump administration is reaching out to foreign governments to assist the DOJ probe should come as no surprise to the Times or anyone else. The DOJ has made no secret about its ongoing investigations into the Russiagate saga, while in June the department said its probe would look into the activities of “foreign intelligence services.”
Later on Monday, soon after the Times report was published, the Washington Post took aim at Attorney General William Barr with a similar charge, ‘accusing’ him of working with foreign officials to carry out the investigation he’s vowed for months to deliver.
Why is it that Barr's discussions with foreign governments related to the Russia investigation are being leaked now to NYT/WaPo? To give more context about what Trump was referring to on the Ukraine phone call. All roads lead back to Mueller. Biden angle is a sideshow.
Australia is relevant to the origins of “Russiagate” because the US intelligence community officials running the counter-intelligence of the Trump campaign – who later went on to become the president’s most outspoken critics – said it was a report by Australian diplomat Alexander Downer about Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos that kicked it all off, not the so-called “Steele Dossier” compiled by a British spy in the pay of Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Four months after his coalition government was brought down by a corruption scandal, former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz looks set to make a resurgence, as the country prepares to vote.
Austrians head to the polls on Sunday in an election that nobody would have anticipated five months ago. Kurz’ government collapsed in May, after German media published a video showing Freedom Party (FPO) leader Heinz-Christian Strache negotiating a quid-pro-quo deal with the supposed niece of a Russian oligarch (who turned out to be an actor) in Ibiza in 2017. Strache’s FPO was the minority partner in a coalition with Kurz’ Austrian People’s Party (OVP), and though Kurz distanced himself from the affair, a motion of no confidence saw the government liquidated and a caretaker administration installed.
According to opinion polls, the scandal seems to have left Kurz relatively unscathed. Riding to power in 2017 on a platform of tougher immigration laws, Kurz’s message still clearly resonates with voters. The party is slated to take 34 percent of the vote on Sunday, up from the 31.5 percent it won in 2017.
The OVP’s opposition, the left-wing Social Democrats (SPO) have not managed to parlay the collapse of Kurz’ government into votes, at least if the polls are to be believed. Although the party has sniped at the OVP/FPO coalition’s ‘hardline’ immigration policies for two years, the SPO is currently projected to take 22 percent of the vote, down from 26.9 percent in 2017.
Even the FPO, at the center of the scandal, is projected to come in third place with 20 percent, down six points from 2017, while the Green Party has more than tripled its share of the vote from 3.8 percent to 12.
As Austria’s government dissolved in May, some analysts predicted that Kurz would rise again, and their predictions were not without precedent.
In 2000, then-OVP leader Wolfgang Schussel became chancellor despite coming in third place in a general election a year before. Schussel entered into a coalition with the FPO, who had won more votes. After a schism within the FPO led to the resignation of several key ministers in 2002, snap elections were called and Schussel’s OVP won 40 percent of the vote before re-entering a coalition with a dramatically weakened Freedom Party.
Right-wing voters who felt let down by the FPO turned to the OVP, a situation that seems to be repeating itself this time around.
Assuming Kurz comes out on top this weekend, the 33-year-old will still need to pick a coalition partner. Political rivalry and ideological differences mean the Social Democrats are out of the question, even though such ‘grand coalitions’ have often been formed since the end of World War II. A renewed coalition with the Freedom Party would be convenient, save for the fact that Kurz might wish to maintain his distance following the ‘Ibizagate’ scandal. A third option for the likely chancellor would involve recruiting the Greens and a smattering of minor players, possibly promising to enact some environmentally friendly policies in exchange for their support on immigration.
With climate change a dominant global issue, such an alliance might benefit both Kurz and the Greens. The FPO is aware of this, and has sought to portray itself as the only option for Kurz. “Without us, Kurz will tilt to the LEFT” warns one campaign poster, while another uses party colors to warn voters “Black-Green threatens YOUR future.”
An FPO campaign video features new party leader Norbert Hofer in couple’s counselling with Kurz, with both leaders saying “we have many ideas in common.”
With even rival parties publicly anticipating a Kurz victory, the real battle will likely take place long after Sunday, when the bargaining, bartering and dealmaking business of forming a government kicks off.

Mark Zakharov made several beloved and widely popular movies that became instant classics during the Soviet times and are still fondly remembered today. The late director also led one of Moscow’s iconic theaters for decades.
The celebrated director passed away from pneumonia complications on Saturday.
Throughout his long career, Zakharov became a household name among movie buffs and theater-goers alike. He directed several acclaimed Soviet dramedies and musicals in the ‘70s and ‘80s, often with fantasy elements, as well as dozens of plays in Moscow’s Lenkom Theater, where he led the artistic department for over four decades.
His work was inspired by classics like Anton Chekhov, Bertolt Brecht and Jonathan Swift, as well as Russian contemporary Soviet playwrights and writers. Zakharov was penchant for assembling ‘dream teams’ of talented actors for his productions, while many of his students later became celebrated performers in their own right.
Zakharov was also noted for skillfully sneaking controversial themes into his plays without being caught by the censors. This did not always work out well, though: a Soviet culture minister once took down his stage production after branding it “ideologically corrupt.”
Nevertheless, the director was not afraid to speak his mind and occasionally ventured into political commentary. At the height of Gorbachev’s Perestroika reforms in the late ‘80s, he made a poignant parable film ‘To Kill a Dragon’ about one’s fight against tyranny. Around that time he is said to have burnt his Communist Party card on live TV.
For his achievements, Mark Zakharov was awarded the highest grade of the Order ‘For the Merit to the Fatherland,’ becoming among the only 54 people to receive this honor.

A New Orleans radio station accused of tweeting a homophobic remark about one of its hosts has alleged the presenter penned the post himself, hoping to force the station to cough up some $2 million to cover his debts.
Earlier this month, WWL Radio’s Seth Dunlap, an openly gay sports broadcaster, said the radio station attacked him with a homophobic slur from its official Twitter handle, viewable to the station’s more than 30,000 followers.
Vowing to go “scorched earth” in his response to the tweet, Dunlap threatened to sue his employer for some $1.8 million, claiming a hostile work environment – but now the station says it has evidence the host posted the offending tweet from his own smartphone, according to a New Orleans Police Department report.
WWL’s parent company, Entercom, provided the results of an internal probe to police on Thursday, which police are now investigating, the report says.
The radio station also alleges it had received a number of letters “regarding wage garnishment” in recent months linked to Dunlap’s personal debts, positing the host was hurting for money.
“Apparently, Mr. Dunlap has a variety of unpaid credit cards and personal loans, and the companies holding the debt are going into collections for the unpaid amount,” WWL said.
Dunlap insists he did not send the tweet, arguing he was not one of the 14 WWL employees with access to the station’s Twitter account – even taking and reportedly passing a polygraph test on Wednesday – but the company says it hired a “digital forensic expert” who identified Dunlap as the author of the post.
After seeing the police report issued Thursday, Dunlap’s attorney, Megan Kiefer, slammed WWL for “false, defamatory and self-serving statements,” but added her client was happy the police were now involved in the matter.
Though police have yet to corroborate the claims of WLL or Entercom, the report indicated investigators were considering possible extortion in the case, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Electric carmaker Tesla Inc interfered with legitimate union organizing and must read a notice to workers explaining their rights in a meeting requiring attendance from Chief Executive Elon Musk, a U.S. labor judge ruled on Friday.
Mark Nordlicht, the founder of defunct hedge fund firm Platinum Partners who was convicted of fraud, was granted a new trial by a New York federal judge on Friday, and David Levy, a former executive of Platinum, was acquitted.
The New York Times tried its hand at a Star Wars meme to celebrate the launch of impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump – and proved what conservatives have been saying for years: the Left can’t meme.
“A long time coming for a White House far from reality,” the clip reads, before launching into scrolling text designed to mimic the opening to the Star Wars films. Titled “Episode 45,” the meme features two and a half minutes of every misdeed – real and imagined – committed by Trump during his presidency, heavy on the Russiagate conspiracy theorizing.
"The president has launched a fresh assault on fair elections." Unfortunately, this isn't happening a long time ago in a universe far, far away. pic.twitter.com/EUuAptsKJv
“Chaos has engulfed the republic,” the Times declares, referring to Trump’s “fresh assault on fair elections” – referring to his July phone call with the president of Ukraine in which he suggested reopening a corruption probe into the gas company that hired ex-Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter on its board – as “the last straw.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi swoops in “to restore some semblance of order to the universe” – and it’s all downhill from there, as accusations from the fictional (Trump gave classified info to foreign officials!) to the petty (Trump called a woman “horseface”!) scroll by.
The Times, which tweeted this creation under “opinions,” was savagely ratio’d, and some – including conservative meme-master Carpe Donktum, a favorite of the president himself – crafted their own responses.
Many were openly disdainful of the Times’ meme efforts: “People can die from cringe related illnesses guys. Do better,” tweeted one.
“I’m gonna subscribe to your paper just so I can cancel my subscription now,” wrote another. “What on earth is wrong with you people?” someone else wondered.
“I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of lies suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something wonderful has happened.”
But some found a silver lining. “The only redeeming quality of this tweet is the ratio,” one person commented, referring to the fact the tweet has been viewed and commented on many more times than it’s been retweeted or liked.

Injecting new life into the ‘Russiagate’ conspiracy theory, Senate Democrats produced a report claiming that the largest US gun rights organization acted like a ‘foreign asset’ for the Kremlin and should lose tax-exempt status.
The 77-page document, published Friday by Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), insinuates that the National Rifle Association (NRA) abused its tax-exempt status by working with the gun rights activist Maria Butina – branded a “Russian agent” – and a Russian official “widely understood to be Alexander Torshin,” in what is said to be a “years-long” effort to infiltrate American politics.
“Butina and Torshin utilized a network of Russian oligarchs and high-ranking Kremlin officials to bring the NRA to Moscow with promises of lucrative business opportunities with Russian entities,” says the report, compiled by the Democrat staff of the Senate Finance Committee, where Wyden is the ranking member.

Wyden urged the government to further investigate the NRA and suggested it should lose its tax-exempt status over the “mounting evidence of rampant self-dealing.”
The Wyden report received the “bombshell” treatment in the US mainstream media, in line with other claims of ‘Russian meddling’ over the past three years. It was also cheered by gun-control advocates, who have targeted the NRA as the principal obstacle to their attempts to outlaw firearms.
BREAKING: A new Senate report reveals that the @NRA was a 'foreign asset' to Russia ahead of 2016, promising access to U.S. officials in exchange for Russian business. https://t.co/hOai6sBXzB
“Following two and a half years of endless, feverish speculation about so-called collusion that cast suspicion on any and all things Russian, the Minority report at issue attempts to paint a picture of the [NRA] with facts and innuendo that together actually demonstrate little to nothing,” the Republican majority on the committee said in their response to Wyden, also released on Friday.
The 19-page retort describes Wyden’s document as “littered with salacious, unsubstantiated accusations” that reads more like “a political document directed at an organization well known in US politics to be despised by Democrats because of its advocacy for Second Amendment rights.”
Butina, a Russian gun rights activist who studied in the US, was arrested last summer and eventually sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to register as a “foreign agent.” Defamed in the media by prosecutors as a “spy” who “traded sex for secrets,” she was held in solitary confinement until pleading guilty. Butina was never interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged Russian interference with the election, and her prosecution has been universally condemned in Russia as politically motivated.
Democrats have sought to blame Russia for Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016, and accused President Donald Trump and the Republicans of “collusion” with the Kremlin to that effect. The special counsel probe found nothing to substantiate that accusation, however.

The Russian airbase in Syria has been boosted with hangars to shelter planes from drone attacks and a centralized fuel system, the Defense Ministry said. The upgrade will also allow for additional aircraft at the strategic base.
While it can already be called a “first class airfield,” capable of accepting all types of planes, including heavy transport aircraft and strategic bombers, work is being done to expand the base’s capabilities even further, Khmeimim’s deputy air regiment commander, Konstantin Dolgov, told Russian media.
He said the reconstruction of the second landing strip is now in full swing, and the capacity of the airbase will be boosted upon its completion.
There are currently 30 aircraft stationed at Khmeimim, with the fleet consisting of Su-35S, Su-34 and Su-24 planes and Mi-35 and Mi-8AMTSh helicopters.
New hangars for those planes have now been put into service, aimed at protecting the aircraft in case of drone attacks, which frequently target the Russian base, but have failed to cause any damage thanks to its air defenses. The hangars’ other purpose is sheltering the hardware from roasting in the hot Syrian sun and prolonging the lifespan of both planes and service equipment. The shade has also improved working conditions for the mechanics, the official noted.
Another major bonus is the new centralized fuel supply system, which has allowed a sharp decrease in the time needed to prepare the planes for recycle sorties.
Russian aviation arrived in Khmeimim in 2015 after Damascus asked Moscow for assistance in fighting terrorism. The air support played a key role in helping the Syrian government turn the tide in the conflict against Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL) and other extremist groups controlling ground in Syria. Now that most of the country is liberated and the militants only hold territory in northwestern Idlib province, the Russian pilots in Syria are mainly performing training sorties.

Food delivery service DoorDash has been hit with a massive data breach, which saw hackers grab sensitive information on just shy of 5 million customers, employees and merchants. The hack has prompted an outpouring of rage online.
The company confirmed the breach in a blog post on Thursday, notifying customers that in May, “an unauthorized third party accessed some DoorDash user data.” The compromised information included names, phone numbers, email and delivery addresses, as well as the last four digits of some customer payment cards, though the company maintains none of the information is “sufficient to make fraudulent charges.”
Users who signed up with the service after April 5, 2018 were not affected in the breach, the company said, but the hack nonetheless swept up data on some 4.9 million users of the app.
The hackers also grabbed the driver’s license numbers of 100,000 delivery drivers, or “Dashers,” and partial bank account numbers, which the company said would also not allow for illicit bank withdrawals.
While DoorDash said it has since taken steps to “further secure” user data and add new “protective security layers,” many netizens were not impressed, with some tweeters urging customers to trash their smartphones altogether until app developers figure out how to protect data.
Man time to throw the whole phone away. These apps are so trash at securing data it’s not even funny https://t.co/LudBKozfDl
DoorDash is unlikely to comply with demands for free food, but the company could be seen interacting with other Twitter users to determine whether they were caught up in the hack.

The Anti-Defamation League has added the thumb-and-forefinger “OK” hand symbol to its online “Hate on Display” database, where it sits alongside Klan robes, swastikas, and other inflammatory memes – just as 4chan intended.
The gesture – which the ADL claimed is a signal for “white power” – joined the group’s ever-lengthening list of hate symbols along with 35 other memes, including the bowl haircut sported by Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof, the Jewish-stereotype cartoon of the “Happy Merchant,” and the slogan “It’s OK to be white.” The list has 214 entries, from the obvious (burning crosses) to the bizarre (over a dozen numbers including 12, 13, 14, 28, 109, and 110).
Explaining that OK is “used by many on the right – not just extremists – for the purpose of trolling liberals” as well as purportedly expressing support for white supremacy, the group warns would-be hate-hunters that “caution must be used in evaluating instances of this symbol’s use.” The ADL plans to distribute a brochure including the new symbols and their descriptions to law enforcement and school districts around the country.
The move represented a reversal for the ADL, which released a statement in 2017 explaining that the symbol was a “popular trolling gesture” with its origins in a prank devised by posters on the anonymous message board 4chan.
“Operation O-KKK” saw a legion of trolls flood social media and civil rights groups with claims the “OK” gesture was a symbol of white supremacy, complete with lines tracing how one could discern the letters W and P (for “white power”) in the gesture.
In order to stop the spread of hate, we must be able to identify it when we see it. Our Hate Symbols Database helps us all do just that. Watch ⬇️ and learn how common gestures can evolve into sincere expressions of hate. For all 179 symbols, click here: https://t.co/pGBgWG1Wwypic.twitter.com/WhlRDnJz3d
Many were indignant at having the ubiquitous gesture classed as hateful.
“I use it often, never as a hate symbol, and I am not letting the ADL follow some pranksters on 4-Chan into making the OK hand sign some kind of secret Klan gang signal,” one Twitter user said.
“This decision by the ADL isn’t just dumb, it’s dangerous,”said another.
I’m not 👌with this. I use the gesture all the time. My kids use the hand gesture all the time. Just because a few use it for for nefarious purposes? Not 👌 with the the minority dictating to the majority here. OK' is now a hate symbol, the ADL says - CNN https://t.co/jBtWoT7mfY
Others suggested a slippery slope was imminent. “The idiots speak english, is that going to be the next thing labeled as a hate symbol? Stupid,” one pointed out.
“Why should the general public concede something as common as the ok hand symbol to racists? A lot of them wave American flags, too,”said another.
Others were resigned to the inevitable “canceling” of the gesture.
Now that the ADL has declared the 👌 hand symbol to be racist, it's only a matter of time before the emoji will probably be banned or changed. Enjoy it while it lasts. 😔
Many people wondered why the US public still took their cue on what constitutes “hate” from a group that swallows 4-chan pranks hook, line, and sinker. “The folks at the ADL have just destroyed the remainder of their credibility with this nonsense,” one user tweeted.

Swimming against the current in her own Democratic Party, 2020 candidate Tulsi Gabbard said she does not support impeachment proceedings against President Trump, amid louder calls within the party to remove him from office.
Moments before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced an impeachment inquiry into the president on Tuesday evening, Gabbard warned the move would only deepen existing divides in the country.
“I think impeachment would be terribly divisive for our already very divided country,” she told CNN's Brooke Baldwin, adding “It's important Donald Trump is voted out of office by the American people.”
The 2020 presidential hopeful also weighed in on allegations that President Trump put undue pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, for corrupt business dealings, arguing the administration should publish the transcript of Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president, “so that Congress can do its job.”
Pro-impeachment Democrats say the president broke the law during that phone call, and that his administration did so again when it refused to share a whistleblower complaint pertaining to the phone conversation. The president indicated the call transcript would soon be shared with Congress, while the White House is reportedly also preparing to share the related complaint, though that did little to muffle Democratic calls to have him removed from office.
Joy across the aisle
Meanwhile, Trump’s Republican primary challengers were enthusiastic about moving forward on impeachment. Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld – who launched his insurgent campaign in February – said the Ukraine scandal “is some combination of treason, bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors,” arguing it was “absolutely” a good reason to impeach.
Weld’s comments came during a presidential debate sponsored by Business Insider, where another GOP challenger, Joe Walsh, also stated “Donald Trump is unfit,” and deserves to be removed from office “very soon.”
The latest Republican to join the 2020 race, former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who was not present for the debate, has yet to express any opinion on impeachment.
President Trump has slammed his presidential challengers as the “three stooges,” following Sanford’s campaign launch earlier this month.

President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro has announced he would be leaving for Russia, to meet with his counterpart Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin previously said that the visit has been in the works, but the exact timing was unknown.
Maduro announced his upcoming visit during a policy meeting, broadcast live on Twitter on Monday evening, saying that he would depart for Russia “in a few hours, tonight.”
In a few hours, tonight, I am going on an official visit to Russia, to meet with our friend and fellow President Vladimir Putin, with his team, with important business groups in Russia
In addition to sitting down with the Russian president and other government officials, Maduro said he plans to meet with local business leaders. One of the items on his agenda is to boost the economic, social and cultural ties between the two nations.
Maduro’s trip to Russia has been widely anticipated. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that the preparations for his visit have been underway, while not announcing the exact date when it is supposed to take place.
There have been rumors that the two leaders might meet on the sidelines of the Valdai Club, an annual international forum in Sochi, scheduled to take place from September 30 to October 3 this year. On Monday, Peskov appeared to confirm that the Russian Black Sea resort would host the upcoming Maduro-Putin meeting, noting that three high-level meetings are planned for the Russian leader at the Valdai Club, including with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The meeting would be the first since Venezuela’s US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself “interim president” in January. While Guaido failed to amass sufficient support from the military to topple the government in wake of a botched coup attempt on April 30, he has been heavily backed by the US allies in the region, with Washington openly calling for a regime change in Venezuela, having strangled its already debilitated economy with rounds of crippling sanctions.
Facing the onslaught of sanctions, Maduro turned to Venezuela’s international allies. In addition to Russia, Cuba, China, Turkey and several other nations continue to stand with the government in Caracas.
One of the reasons for Maduro’s last-minute announcement might have been fear of fake news. During the April coup attempt, US officials said that Maduro was preparing to flee the country to Cuba, but Russia persuaded him to stay. Both Maduro and Moscow laughed off the claims as propaganda.
Last time Putin and Maduro met, in December 2018, Caracas and Moscow inked some $5 billion worth of contracts related to oil production. In March, Maduro directed Venezuela’s state-run energy giant PDVSA to relocate its European HQ to Russia, after the White House blocked payments to the company’s accounts and told byers of Venezuela’s oil to channel funds to Guaido’s accounts instead.
In late January, the US froze $7 billion of assets belonging to PDVSA and its US subsidiary Citgo, with the US court in August confirming the new board of Citgo directors ‘appointed’ by Guaido.
